McKinsey Value Lever: Mobilize Resources Implementation in Sumatran Orangutan Society

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem..

Good day, my readers!
Welcome back to my blog.

On today's post, I will be touching about the McKinsey value levers again. The main difference here is that the organisation will be on the Social Sector,in this case the non-profit organisation.

Ladies and gentleman, I introduce you to The Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS).
SOS was built in 1997 by the late Lucy Wisdom and now cooperate with the Orangutan Information Centre (OIC) in Sumatra, Indonesia, led by Panut Hadisiswoyo. Together, they go with a mission to protect Sumatran Orangutan in Indonesia from extinction. SOS has many patrons come from wild-life public figures like Suzi Eszterhas, Linda Wain, and Michael Cooper. Also, the patrons come from actors/actresses like Bill Bailey from U.K., Chrissie Hynde from England, and Nadya Hutagalung from Indonesia.

Now, let's talk about the relation between this organisation with the McKinsey value levers in the Social Sector.

Out of four area of the levers, SOS is mostly suitable in the Mobilize Resources.
In order to achieve their mission in protecting Orangutan and their habitat, SOS looks for donors or donations and volunteers from people supporting their project. They use the social technology to help them gathering the donations and volunteers. It can be from Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. They also use social technology in getting some supports from other organisations or foundations to achieve their goals.

Fundraising
On this side of the mobilize resources area, SOS relies on the fundraising to their supporters and members of the project. Some or the ways SOS collect the donations are from the donations (single or monthly payment), buying T-Shirts, and Shopping Online. Using the social media, fundraising can be done by anyone, anywhere. No matter in which country a person is, as long as they can do a credit card or an online payment, they are able to participate in the fundraising.

Creating and Expanding Volunteer Network
SOS provides a volunteer registration for those who want to join the team in raising awareness about Orangutans. The volunteer will also do fundraising and campaigning for the Orangutan. Social technology users might get influenced to join in the project if the social network plays the role of making them see their acquaintances becoming volunteers as well.

Retain Support
In order to keep a good communication, SOS provides a membership registration, so they still will get supports and donations from the people who are aware with the project. For those who live outside the country of SOS, social technology can help them getting the same treat in participating on the project. It can be from Facebook, twitter, email, or forums.

In summary, The Sumatran Orangutan Society is one of the best example of Mobilize Resources area of McKinsey Value Levers in Social Sector, because the organisation's main power comes from the fundraising, volunteers, and long-life supports from their members. Social technology can help SOS in spreading the project all over the country and helping them to get more donations and volunteers.

That is all from me. I hope you find this information useful and if you can, support this foundation as well.
Cheers
Della

  1. Hi i'm from Indonesia! Its true that because of forest destruction, many of orangutan are killed, this situation is very sad.

Its very good that there are organization that cares about it.

Do you think what SOS has done is enough or should they search another way to pursue their cause?

    1. Hi! :D
Nice to meet you! Where are you from? I'm from Depok, West Java.

In terms of website development, I think it is enough. But, I think they need to be more active in marketing and promoting their campaign and website.
They need to hire more volunteer from public figures and artists.
Nadya Hutagalung is one of the best volunteer they could get, because she is very famous in Indonesia. She's known to be very sympathetic and supporting flora and fauna. SOS needs this kind of person more.
